I’m going to take this week’s post in a different direction. I will base it around one word–hope. By its very definition, hope brings opportunity and chance; the opportunity to do better and the chance to make a change.
We’ve all seen a change this week due to the presidential election, and for some, a change that has been long awaited. The outcome of Barack Obama becoming the 44th president of the United States has brought hope to many individuals. This hope is for the future, for individual reasons, and hope for one another. I believe Obama said it best “America is strongest when we are united, not divided”.
Living in the twenty first century can sometimes be scary. Things happen in our world that one may never think could be possible, but oftentimes the inevitable happens. Turning on the news each day becomes a depressing time because more bad news is delivered and the good news is cut short. Despite all the downfalls that occur in our world, I do hope for a better future, and even if we hit rock bottom, the only way out is up.
I want to leave you with a poem by Emily Dickinson, “Hope”
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I’ve heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

I agree that this country definitely needs to move in another direction without question. Also, hope is a good thing. But, I am not completely sure that Obama is the right method for us to move in a better direction. However, time will tell and maybe it will prove me wrong in my views. Futhermore, I agree that the news, these days, is full of negative and depressing content.
Your right about Obama, we don’t know what he’ll do until the time comes when he is in office. I do hope that he does prove you wrong because we all need to look forward to a positive future.
Turning on the news becomes a risk to me because of what may be on the television screen. Your right, its too negative not leaving much room for anything else.
Oddly enough I have hung onto hope this semester. My friend got me a Willow Tree figure of a little person holding a balloon that said hope on it. I have it on my desk. Hope is a powerful thing.
I have read this poem before and, although it’s not my favorite, I love the line, “and sings the tune without the words.” This is true of hope. It allows us to sing a tune or be sure of what we hope for, even if we don’t know the words or are cannot see what the future holds.
Hope is a very powerful thing, your right. Its encouragement, it brings strength when you feel like giving up, and it motivation for the future.
I have to agree, this quote is not my favorite either but it fit well with what I had in mind for the blog. That line is exactly what caught my eye because no one can predict what will happen in life, but with a little hope and encouragement, you can sing the tune without the words.
